But the humans grew to hate them for their closeness to God, and their beauty, and their ability to soar through the skies that became their only refuge from the human hoards.
But no Angel can fly forever.

Some, like Michael, could fight and fight well and fight long, but the humans were like vermin. One on one, they posed no challenge, but they would come in swarms that took down lesser Angels.

Even Michael and Rafael needed to set down sometimes, needed a rest between the fighting and the killing.

And so the humans slowly destroyed the Angels while their God did nothing.

Once the Archangels fell, the Seraphim weren't far behind, and the Cherubs had no chance.

In desperation, the remaining Angels sliced off their own wings, giving up the glory of the skies in a desperate bid for survival.
They hid amongst the humans and over time, as all creatures do, found comfort where they could.

And so a new race was born, part Angel, part human and wholly hated by all.

EJ Divitthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04803344338588334636noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4080383226046891844.post-28870123633447702592021-01-06T12:03:00.003-05:002021-01-08T09:16:55.928-05:00Employees Appreciate Small GesturesToday my boss gave me a wall calendar. I was surprised and pleased. It's a relatively small thing for him. He probably paid $7 for it and wrote it off as a business expense but it put a smile on my face.
Here's why.

Every year a vendor comes in and gives us all desk blotter/desktop calendars--the huge ones that you put under your keyboard and write on. I never take one because I don't like having it across my desk. I always wait until a week or so into the new year and buy myself a wall calendar off the discount rack.
This year the boss went out and bought desktop calendars for the employees that usually get one. He also brought me a wall calendar. One I had not asked for nor mentioned. When he handed it to me, he said, "Here I got this because I know you prefer the wall ones."
As simple as that and as cheap as that and I felt appreciated and acknowledged.
Small gestures matter.

P.S. My boss has since come back and taken the calendar back stating he needs it for the break room. And yes, I'm probably unreasonably annoyed by that. Small things matter.EJ Divitthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04803344338588334636noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4080383226046891844.post-59694879277397126672020-06-02T09:04:00.003-04:002023-02-22T13:49:09.294-05:00Fat Girl Finishing SchoolFat Girl Finishing School by Rachel Wiley
I didn't like all of the poems in this collection. For example, the Bette Midler one went completely over my head. So why 5 stars? Because I did like several, and loved several, and found many notable lines, and in a collection of poems, finding multiple you love gets 5 stars.
"My excuse is pumpkin ice cream and three seasons of Luther on Netflix."
"I wanted to love you like a landmark
Now you just be some Fotomart."
The beginning of, "Blood Tongue".
Lot's of great lines in "Wife Material".
An interesting introduction to a lifestyle very different from my own.
I got a chance to read this for free through Netgalley's ebook program.
A nice little paranormal mystery romance set in a small town in Cape Cod. I enjoyed the story, the mystery of who the ghost was was well done. My only complaint would be I would have liked Jesse and Lark's story to be a little more fleshed out; book seemed a little short. I guess that means I liked them.
I would recommend for fans of paranormal romances.
I received a free copy of the ebook from the author in exchange for an honest review.

It's odd to think it's been almost two years. Odd but accurate. You see in June 2018 I had surgery to remove a tumor from my left lung. They removed 40% of the lower lobe of my left lung to get at the tumor and remove it.
I didn't start feeling at all like myself until at least February 2019.
I've basically been reconstructing my life ever since.
It's surprising how life alteringly exhausting it is to remove a piece of yourself.EJ Divitthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04803344338588334636noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4080383226046891844.post-90955570140894880952018-05-01T09:22:00.003-04:002018-05-01T09:22:54.194-04:00Book Review: Song Of Blood And Stone, Earthsinger Chronicles Book OneSong of Blood & Stone by L. An enjoyable read.
This book is a fantasy novel with warring countries trying to break through/defend a magical barrier between the lands. It has basic technology like electricity and radios which is unusual in books that seem more high fantasy. Unusual in a good way as I enjoyed the update.
This is the story of Jack and Jasminda trying to save their world from a vicious magical All Father who drains people's magic to add to his own. It has fights, a romance subplot, sibling rivalry, bad soldiers, good soldiers, confused Sisters, and a magical Queen stuck in a sleep spell.
I would recommend this book. I've already recommended it to someone.
I received a digital copy from NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion. It has an expiration date so I consider it no different than if I had borrowed it from the library.
A good book, the start of a new series--I believe book 2 comes out this fall--that would be a good addition to any fantasy, urban or paranormal fantasy collection.

<span style="background-color: #444444; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px;">An interesting collection of stories from the point of view of the villains.
<span style="background-color: #444444; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px;">I'm a long time fan of Jim Butcher so I had already read "Even Hand"; the Marcone point of view story. Marcone is a great villain because he's a very nuanced one. He has his own code of conduct that he doesn't break. A good story for fans. I do wish they had made it clear it was a previously published story.
<span style="background-color: #444444; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px;">I'm also a long time fan of the Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne. The IDC story wasn't a crucial one but does tie into the greater universe. He has Loki going to meet with Lucifer to ask for assistance with Ragnorak. It was entertaining but I don't feel I would have missed anything in the universe by not reading it.
<span style="background-color: #444444; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px;">My favorite story in this collection was Sixty Six Seconds by Craig Schaeffer. I was very pleased with the amount of character and world that was in such a short story. I would read him again.
<span style="background-color: #444444; font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , serif; font-size: 14px;">Over all some interesting introductions to many different worlds and authors that is worth checking out if you like short stories or trying out lots of different authors and worlds.

Loved The Movie! So I did it. I ran out to the theater to see Wonder Woman within a few days of it opening. Tuesday to be precise. I told my husband well in advance that we were going to the theater to see this one. I have to throw my money behind the first female superhero movie in my lifetime. (I'm not counting Elektra or Catwoman because they both are more anti-heroes; not because both movies were kind of bad.)

So first off there were some mistakes with the props for the time period. One of them rubbed me wrong but overall, I wasn't bothered. Some series history buffs might be.

Second, the ending was a little uneven.
Having said that, this movie was awesome.

It had lots of people kicking ass--most of which just happened to be female. It did a wonderful job of portraying Wonder Woman as both naïve and a serious badass. I think Gal Gadot did a wonderful job. It had great side characters like Etta, Steve's secretary, and the cast of men that followed Steve and Diana behind enemy lines. It made me laugh and at some points, want to cheer. It had beautiful scenery contrasting with dark, dreary scenes.

I am thrilled they did such a good job with Wonder Woman and I'm already looking forward to Wonder Woman II. This is easily the best of the DC extended universe films so far--by far. Run out and see it! I don't think you'll be disappointed. The holidays are over. The lights are down. The tree is packed up. No more nutcracker statues on the fireplace and no more excuses for why I'm not writing.
It's time to buckle down and plan this year's novel.
I've finished the Ghost Protector Trilogy so I'm looking to do something completely new. I've been toying with two ideas. One has dragons and come on dragons are always great; the other has a descendant of Medusa trying to break the family curse.
Brainstorming must ensue.
I have one more week in my self appointed deadline to decide and then I need to outline and start the story. I received a free arc in exchange for my honest review.
When I first opened this book on my Kindle, I thought it was pretty short. It registered as being I believe 5% in and I was only on the table of contents. Turns out it isn't short; it's just densely packed.
This book breaks down customer service for the new generation; the digital one. It goes through the importance of treating customers not as demographics but rather as types. What a customer loves and what a customer hates are more important than their age, race or creed. My only complaint was I felt it was a little too general in places but this was probably necessary so as to appeal to multiple business types.
I think this would be an excellent book for a small business and useful for bigger businesses as well.

I received an ARC of this from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion. Let me say right off that I've read the previous four books in the series and enjoyed them so I was eagerly looking forward to this one.
It did not disappoint.
For those familiar with the Rock Kiss series, you're already prepared for this final (?) book where the keyboardist in the band gets a chance to win back the love of his life.
The book takes up pretty much where the others left off. We see references to events in prior books but they don't ruin this book. They just pique your interest in reading the previous ones; if you haven't already.
Sarah and Abe were married but Abe was a drug addict and tormented by the death of his sister and he basically ruined everything. Sarah is also portrayed as too timid to stand up for herself or admit her own needs but it's pretty much Abe's fault.
As usual, there were the hot sex scenes for which this series is known.
I have only a couple of small complaints. One, Sarah had a lot of accidental pregnancies. It seemed like stretching things a bit. Two, Jeremy was talked about a lot but never shown. It was all second hand information. Otherwise, a good solid romance and a good solid finale for this series about members of a rock band finding love and redemption. I would recommend the series if you enjoy hot happy ever afters especially with redeemed bad boys.

“On the day I buried my sister, I felt completely numb,” she says. She takes a long hard drag of her cigarette as though trying to pull every drop of nicotine out of it. She leans over and crushes it out in the metal ashtray already overflowing with cigarettes. Her handcuffs clink against the metal table as she draws back. She looks up at the ceiling and lets out the smoke in a long burst.

“Are you trying to say it wasn’t your fault?” the detective asks, looking up from his notebook. One dark bushy eyebrow travels up his forehead as though it is trying to follow his receding hairline.

“No,” she says flatly. “I’m just trying to explain. Listen.” She leans as far across the table as she can. “Have you ever lost anyone you loved? Had them suddenly ripped away from you?”

“I was under the impression your sister was sick for quite a few years before she passed,” the detective says consulting some notes on his pad.

“And you think that means it wasn’t sudden?” she demands. She pushes herself away from the table; scooting her chair back. She starts to rise but the metal chain connecting the handcuffs is looped around a metal bar on the edge of the table and she is jerked back down before she can fully rise. “It’s always sudden.”

The detective nods as if conceding the point and gestures for her to continue.

She drops back down in her seat and puts her elbows on the table. She leans her head down and rubs one hand through her hair. The burnt ends of her brown hair break off in her hand and fall down onto the table in clumps that she ignores. “I drove myself to the cemetery. People offered and the funeral home would have given me a limo but I wanted to be alone.” She grasps her hands together and starts to rub them one over the other. “When it was over, I stayed there staring down at that horrible hole in the ground and I felt frozen. Like there was this wall of ice between me and this horrible thing. I didn’t want to move; didn’t want to crack it. I knew once I started to cry, I wasn’t going to stop. So I just stood there.” She rubs her hands over her eyes; missing the look of pity in the detective’s.

“I’m not sure how long I stood there when this guy came up to me. I didn’t see him walk up. He was just there. I ignored him. I didn’t want sympathy. I didn’t want to be consoled. If he tried to make me feel better, it would just make me feel something and that was the last thing I wanted. So I ignored him. But that didn’t seem to bother him at all. We just stood there until it got ridiculous.” She pauses now; her eyes distant as if remembering.

“What happened next?” the detective asks her.

“I turned around and started to walk away. He came with me. Still not saying anything; just keeping pace.” She goes back to rubbing her hands together. “I got frustrated with him and then I got mad at him for making me feel frustrated. Making me feel anything.” She takes a gulp of air and wipes her hand across her face. “So I turn on him. I’m ready to blast him and I look him dead in the face and I open my mouth to yell but he’s just looking at me. He’s looking at me like he can see straight through my soul. I stopped right there with my mouth hanging open.”

“You need a distraction, he tells me. He holds out his hand. It’s just hanging there between us. He doesn’t say anything else. Doesn’t introduce himself. And I look down at that hand and I think what the hell. I put my hand in his and he turns and starts walking away taking me with him.” She gulps now. “That what the hell moment. That one moment of wanting to be anywhere and do anything as long as I didn’t have feel; to hurt. That’s the moment I threw my life away.”

At least it did for me.

Here are some examples:

My writing prompts book received two reviews on the same day. The first said the prompts were too short and therefore pretty useless. They needed to be longer; to have some meat to them. The second reviewer loved them. They said the quick little prompts gave them lots of room to expand and explore without hemming them in. Same exact book. Two very different reactions.

The first book in my paranormal fantasy trilogy was described by one reader as being a slow exploration of death and family. Another described it as a quick paced fun read. If you read those reviews individually, would you even think they were for the same book?

I had no idea going in how very differently the same book could be received by different people. I don't just mean that some people liked it and some didn't. I mean the reasons, the perspectives.

I guess it makes sense. We are all unique people with unique experiences that color our worlds. I just didn't realize how wildly that can vary.

Even when are all in the same place, we took very different routes to get there.

I love this short story. I am a fan of the Kate Daniels series so I was already familiar with Jim and Dali. It was wonderful to see them interact. There is another Jim and Dali story called Magic Steals and it will be part of the Night Shift anthology. I recommend you read this one and then go and read that one.

I would say this story would appeal more to fans of the series but it can be read as a stand alone as well. It is set in a world where magic has started to come back and overtake technology. Tech and magic fight it out constantly for the upper hand and people get dragged along behind.

Cute and clever. Paranormal steampunk.
This book was recommended to me by a friend and I have to say I truly enjoyed it. The book is set in an alternate reality Victorian England (about mid 1800s) where werewolves and vampires are a part of society. They exist and so does the etiquette on dealing with them.
And as they exist, so does their opposite; people whose touch cancel out their supernatural powers. These people are known as preternaturals or soulless. Our fearless heroine (and spinster having reach early twenties without marrying) Alexia is such a soulless. This doesn't stop a certain supernatural from being romantically interested in her and it doesn't stop her from getting in the middle of some supernatural troubles.
Alexia is a strong woman who isn't going to let a little thing like having no soul stop her from saving society or setting it on its ear.

Wonderful movie: 5 out of 5 Stars

John Wick
Starring Keanu Reeves
Rated: R-violence and a lot of it

I truly enjoyed this movie. It's rare to find a movie where you want to root for the guy doing all of the killing but I absolutely did. John Wick is a serious badass mafia hitman who goes legit for the love of a good woman. She dies and an asshole with terrible timing comes after John.

This movie had a wonderfully realized world to it. You can tell the writer and director spent a lot of time on getting the details right. The gold coin system for example. They have their own exclusive currency that is just used by the criminal underworld; making them easily distinguishable from ordinary people who might wander into the hotel or club.

The action scenes are very well choreographed. I would especially point to the scene where John is fighting in a car and the one where he is fighting in a hotel room.

There were points in this movie that were truly sad--especially the beginning--and points where I laughed out loud. I would absolutely watch this movie again and I'm delighted to hear they are planning a sequel.

Fair warning: there is a lot of violence in this movie so it's not for the young or faint of heart.EJ Divitthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04803344338588334636noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4080383226046891844.post-49673125118894281702016-06-08T08:57:00.000-04:002016-06-08T08:57:32.584-04:00Ghost Of A Chance Is One Of The Reviewer Discussion Choices

It's been a lot of work but it's finally here; the final book of my Ghost Protector Trilogy. I'm working on batching all three books into one complete trilogy edition but the hard part is done. All three books have been written and edited. (Oh the editing!) Covers have been made and all the other little and not-so-little things that go with producing a book. I'm thrilled and a little lost, honestly. Time to find something else to write about.EJ Divitthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04803344338588334636noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4080383226046891844.post-90948372518212407012016-06-01T07:28:00.000-04:002016-06-01T07:28:30.849-04:00Free Ebook June 1 to June 5
